I knew it was time to retire when I couldn't even feign interest in what the company honchos from afar were saying about the latest management "device" (the Pike Place Fish Market book).

I silently applauded a co-worker who told them, "I just went through 6 months of chemo and radiation therapy for cancer. I really can't get excited about a 'great customer service' book." Besides, they worked in computer security. Should someone make happy about a serious virus infection to seem like they are giving great customer service?

I was so glad my manager's manager called to say I was being "waved out" a few months later.
