I know I'm supposed to have fixed income assets in my portfolio, but it never seems to me to be the right time to buy them

What we are suppose to do is manage our portfolios in a way that takes advantage of our skills and personalities to earn us some money on our working capital.

By reading your post it is easy to tell that you are trying to do that. Don't let someone else' preferred way of doing things diminish your own educated and thoughtful opinion. I look at it this way, most anyone can open the Betty Crocker cook book and make a meal but the good cooks look at the recipe and make it their own. My neighbor may not think my meatloaf is as good as their mothers and that is just fine because the odds are my kids like my meatloaf better than our neighbors mothers recipe.

All portfolio allocation is an educated attempt. Other strategies may turn out to be the better choice but there is no way that today we can know that for sure. 6 months or a year from now we will hear from someone saying "I told you so" and they could have just as easily been in our position.

With all the above on the table it would be possible to selectively buy corporate debt in any or alll of the industries you are looking at and that may be the answer you are looking for.
