I know they are physical, but they are not quite the bearer bonds of old either.

If you have the serial number and issue date of the bond, they can re-issue the bonds if they were to be lost/burn for no charge. For this reason I keep all an electronic list of this information on my compter, then upload this file to a secure server (like x-drive). I also backup my quicken data and other financial data like this.
