I lived in RI for roughly 20 years and plan on moving back when I'm ready to settle down. RI is a great place to grow up and an even better place to raise a family. It's less than an hour from Boston (less by train) without all the city hassle. In addition, thanks in large part to SOuthwest Airlines, you can jump to anywhere in the country for a very good price. Rhode Island has beautiful beaches, great food, and it's own unique culture that only an RIer understands. Probably the best thing about RI: everything is 20 minutes or less from your front door. I live in DC now, but I'll be back in RI very soon...
