I once asked him why and he launched into a long, loud tirade how all the "buck privates are going out and buying these fancy sports cars and then crying to me that their salary isn't enough to raise a family." He went on and on about how he never owned a car like that and blah, blah, blah.

Working on an Army post in Germany, I can vouch for the fact that a lot of junior enlisted personnel are buying cars that are WAY too much for their salaries. Even with the tax-free status and the discounts available, an E-2 or E-3 driving around in a top of the line Mercedes or Porsche is a bit much.

Some of them may have rich families but if so, there are a lot of rich kids in the Army right now. An E-4 who works in the building next to us just bought a brand new BMW M3. The going price even with the discounts is over 50k last time I looked.
