I only keep receipts for big ticket items or if I can reasonably expect to need them again (gifts I buy that might be returned, etc). Receipts for food, gas, clothes (after I know they fit) all get thrown out. I put almost everything like that on my credit card and then download the transactions to quicken once a week or so to keep track of everything. I used to save cc receipts but after several years and no discrepancies I decided it wasn't worth my time to sort all those receipts for the slight possibility of a mistake.
