I personally don't move the pieces when I'm thinking out a variation. I have no problem if you do it, and I certainly don't want you to feel that you need to forfeit because of it. Not moving them is just my own personal thing.....good practice for tourney play. That and the fact that I'm too lazy to set the board back up the way it was before I moved the pieces around :)
