I read that there is going to be a 2:1 split later in the month, but only stockholders who hold shares as of a certain date qualify.
Is this correct?

No, not as you state it. Always ignore the phrase "shareholders of record", you will only needlessly loose sleep over it. It is for accounting purposes.

What would happen to my shares if I bought tomorrow? Will the 2:1 split have an effect on my shares?

Yes. Later in the month you will have twice as many
shares with a share price divided in half. Thus your
total value would not have changed.
