I recently ordered my credit report from the three primary agencies. My report from Equifax arrived yesterday and I was shocked to see there were 42
inquiries listed! Is this bad? That seems like an inordinate amount!

Last year I did apply for (and receive) about five store credit cards. I have since paid and closed them all. I know this accounted for some of the
inquiries, but there are still so many more! What does this do to my credit rating?

Yes that does sound like a lot of inquiries, but whether it could hurt you or not depends on how close the inquiries are. Do they span over a year or over a longer period of time. When you are applying for credit elsewhere some organizations will look at how many inquiries you have in the past 6 months. If there are a large amount in that period this could reflect badly.

Otherwise, personally, I would also be concerned if I could not account for the inquiries. The report should list who made each inquiry and you should be able to account for each inquiry. Only certain people should be able to check your credit report and usually you have to give permission.
