I recently pulled carfax report for our 2001 Mercury Villager Sport minivan we have put on sale.

Carfax only has accidnet information that was reported to Police agencies. Minor accidents to the bumper etc are just mentioned as on so and so date the car was in a fender bender. If the air bags were deployed. Also it mentions severity of the accident and if the car was driven or towed to the body shop.

Carfax also lists number of owners (minivan is in my wife's name and when she changed her last name she also updated name on title and carfax reports the name change as a second owner) and mileage of the car, which is mostly not accurate.

It lists if the mileage activity was consistant meaning if any mileage rollback was ever done.

Lists any Manufacturer buyback.Recall information on the car. How much warranty is left. Any damage due to fire, flood or any act of nature.

Carfax also provides buy back guarantee if any of the problems listed with DMV is not listed on their report.

Don't know if the local shop info will be on carfax report.

Replacing the bumper cover - if done by a professional body shop and if original parts are used, should not be a problem. Damages not reported to Insurance claim or Police Report does not seem to appear on carfax reports.

Also know that vehicle history reports can be obtained from credit bureaus who might have more info than carfax.

HIH.
