I remember hearing that it's possible to get a free credit report once per year - could that be true? I checked into various sources, such as Worth Knowing, but it seems as if I order theirs, I'm setting myself up for future headaches: subjecting myself to all their free offers, having to cancel the trial service that comes with the free report, etc.

Any advice? Thanks.

If it is not possible to get a free report once a year in your state you can always get one free after renewing your insurance.
All insurances include credit scoring as a part of their decision and I had no problem requesting a copy of my report after than following "if you were denied credit/job/insurance".
On insurance paper they always say "our decision was in part based on information provided by.... you have a right to request a free copy of your file from the company listed above", which I exercise :)
