I remember traveling to Charleston not long after Hugo struck our state (SC). The destruction of the Francis Marion State Forest would make a grown man cry. It is now almost back like it was; however, as stated, most of the trees are no longer "old growth". The entire trip from Columbia to Myrtle Beach and from Columbia to Charleston showed a tremendous amount of destruction to the forests.

Very sad.

When we moved here 10 years ago (13 years after Hugo), you could still see evidence of Hugo's path of destruction. Now, not so much--only those familiar with how it was before can make the comparison. Damaged homes and destroyed trees have been rebuilt and replanted/self-seeded. Empty lots are mostly developed. We have a gorgeous new bridge and other infrasturcture improvements. But we pay a small fortune for homeowner's insurance due to Hugo (89) and Floyd (99) in this otherwise pretty low COL area (well, house prices are high compared to other parts of the South, but hey, it's Charleston and barrier island beaches).
