I suppose Republicans were similarly disappointed to have supposed they had "won" the Civil War, only to have the Ku Klux Klan pop up and challenge the Union victory through an insurgency.

Eventually the North got tired of military occupation of the South and went home, leaving that insurgent force in control for another hundred years.

Better to have not tried and fought the war, I suppose?

Hmmm. The civil war was fought to stop the secession at first, and then to free the slaves. Two fairly worthy goals, in my opinion.

Why, exactly, are we fighting a war in Iraq? WMD? Nope. 9/11? Nope. Sadam was a evil-doer? Could be, but he is hardly alone in that?

Better to have not fought in Iraq? Yes.

The original KKK 'insurgency' only lasted about three years before it petered out (1865 to 1868). It was largely aimed at blacks and republicans and is a large reason the southern states were so strongly democratic. Now those states are strongly republican. Make what you want of that.
