I think as important today as the amount in one holding is the amount you may have in one sector.

Generally speaking, when there is bad/good news for a sector, most of the stocks in that sector go down/up.

For example: oil per barrell goes up, many of the oil related stocks go up...and vice versa, interest rate fluctuations usually have an impact on the financial sector and the REITS, etc.

I don't know what an acceptable risk per sector would be other than what you can sleep with.
