I think that any Japanese citizens monitoring this conversation would be outraged by the arrogrance of our telling them what they should do. Although we in the U.S. are currently enjoying a major and long-lasting boom, I remember bust times also.

Japan society is shaped by it's environment (as all societies are), and the crowded conditions underwhich they live means that an american-style consumer economy simply won't work for them. You want them to spend more money - on what? Even very rich japanese can not have large suburban homes on large lots with suv's in their 3-car garages.

It seems to me that most of our concern is that we cannot continue our boom unless they remain prosperous also. So that we won't be dragged down whenever a particular nation or region has problems, I think that we sould concentrate on doing spreading out our trade with all regions of the world. Latin America, Africa, India and Pakistan are places where we should be looking harder for business to do.
