I think the rat race allows way too little time for personal social activities. Contacts at work can be a reasonable substitute, but there you have relationships that can be beyond your control. Some are intensely competitive and political. Some are strange personalities you must work with but not ones of your first choice for socializing.

Getting out of the rat race so you can spend more time with people you like being with and less in forced interactions is one of the advantages.
