I think this discussion needs some accurate information about the CREF Equity Index Account. I posted the TIAA-CREF URL in a previous message, but I will summarize the data from that site here.

The CREF Equity Index Fund invests in almost the entire U.S. stock market. It is most like the Russell 3000, not the Russell 2000.

Here is the definition that TIAA-CREF gives of the Russell 3000 Index:

"The Russell 3000®, compiled by the Frank Russell Company, is an unmanaged index of the stocks of 3,000 of the largest U.S. companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange, other U.S. exchanges, and over the counter (i.e., stocks such as those listed on the NASDAQ system). Each stock in the index is weighted by its relative market value. The account isn't promoted or sponsored by or affiliated with the Frank Russell Company, which is not responsible for any representations about the account. You can't purchase shares in the index. The Russell 3000 is a registered trademark of the Frank Russell Company."

Note that it indexes "3,000 of the largest U.S. companies," weighted by relative market value.

Here are actual results (average annual compound rate) for the CREF Equity Index Account (these are the results for the CREF Equity Index Account not the Russell 2000 or the Russell 3000):

1 year 28.42%
3 years 28.06%
Since inception (4-29-94) 25.51%.
