I think this is a fad. The scars are something to show off to friends, just like new Nike Air Jordans were when I was in school.

I first noticed it back when emo was the big deal, maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Yes it is gross and stupid, but I don't think it is all that harmful in the big scheme of things. I think most of it is wrapped up in control issues. Kids are pubertizing and wanting to be in control, and parents are fighting to stay in control. This is just another bullet in the arsenal of the already impossible to manage teenager.
