I think you should be willing to give the dog back - since you said it's a good friend, and it sounds like you trust they'll care for it - but be honest and let him know you've grown attached, the dog's happy, and would like to keep him/her if they have any hesitation about taking the dog back.

You said the husband's only going to be home during the weekends, so it's possible with 3 kids the wife will feel she already has enough on her hands with out a 4th fur-child.
