I thought they took care of themselves more less like a savings account.

If it's any comfort, many, many people are in the same boat...they just take the "default" investment option and never realize they can invest more aggressively. I forget the numbers, but it is something like 15 or 20% of all 401k participants never change their investment options from the default.
