I took the approach that I would instead apply the money that would go into a non-tax deductible IRA towards my home mortgage. I treated it in my mind like I was investing in a bond fund (sort of). Instead, I didn't pay interest on that $2-4K. On the other hand I have been in the fortunate position in the last few years of having other kinds of investments and more than adequate income.
