I visited England this year and used my debit card for everything (purchases and cash withdrawals). I was there for nine days. On about day four I received a voice mail on my home phone to call the bank.... they needed verification that I really was the one doing the charges since it was out of the norm of my regular activity. Based on this experience, I would say to anyone that it is an excellent idea to advise your bank(s) ahead of time. Had I not checked my voice mail daily, I would have probably had an experience with a declined charge that would not have been too fun.
