I want to thank irasmilo, XCgeoff, ptheland, and TMFPMarti for their responses to my question regarding the letter my dad received from Pershing. As it turns out, the letter is legitimate and not a phishing attempt. I checked my dad's 1099s from his last tax return and found that a brokerage that he formerly used (he took all the money out of this account about nine months ago) had reversed the order of two numbers in his social. So he and I will go to the local Social Security Administration and have a form sent to Pershing to correct the error. Thanks again.
