I was just running the numbers this morning. When I retire, I won't pay Social Security any more, nor will I contribute to my 401(k), my IRA, or DH's IRA. Also, we will move to an area where we can buy a house outright with the equity in our current house. Social Security + 401(k) + 2 * IRA = my cost of working, and it's about $23,000 right now. That amount plus the principal and interest part of the mortgage brings the cost of working in this area up to about $34,000. 25 * $34,000 = $850,000 I don't have to save.Don't forget it will run $10K+ per year for insurance :oC.
