I was of the opinion that that reclaiming base oil from used oil is less costly than getting it from new, in large part as the refineries cost considerably less. Valveline says the base oil that they use in the NextGen oil products is equally as good as base oil it uses from refining base oil from crude. However, there seems to be a limit on how much used oil they can get, as it is often just used as fuel. Of course, they have a fairly decent source of getting used oil in their quick change shops, and they partnered with Walmart and some others to get more. Plus they have offered coupons off the purchase of their NextGen products for used oil - Generally, $7 off for 5 qts of conventional NextGen oil and $10 off 5 qts of high mileage and synthetic NextGen products, though the discount programs seem to be only intermittently offered.

Ultimately, I think it's a worthwhile endeavor and product that helps reduce dependency on foreign oil w/o sacrificing performance, or cost for that matter... if it's done right.
