I was working as much as possible in order to finance ER and then developed carpal tunnel syndrome.

My doctor thought it might be a good idea if I worked less for a while to try and heal it. My department let me work three days per week (21 hours). That was August of '99 and I cannot imagine working a 40 hour week anymore. My carpal tunnel is better now too. I was fortunate to keep benefits, 401k and insurance. I stagger my schedule with another 3-day-worker - she works Monday, Tuesday & Wednesay and I work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Having a four day weekend is just ... unbelievably terrific. Quality of life MUCH improved. This is not as great as ER, granted, but not too bad for a working stiff.
