I wonder if it will also make it more available for shorting, given the 50% increase in the number of available shares to trade.

Short selling is selling shares you do not own.

As I understand it, there is no direct correlation to shares short and shares in actual existence.

That is, no one 'borrows' or 'owns' the actual shares you sell short - there isn't a one-to-one accounting.

Yes, there can be more shares short than actually issued.... It happened with the Facebook IPO. The underwriting banks sold more shares than were issued.
