I would like to second the suggestion of a hybrid bike if you are only planning on riding around town. This is the only type of biking I do and I love my hybrid. It combines the best of a mountain bike (knobby tires for better traction, softer seat, lower gears and upright handle bars) with the large tires of a racing bike (allows more distance with less pedaling). For a non serious biker like me who just wants to use it for commuting, I think this is the perfect bike.
