I would like to use something other than the sink to clean iron with lye, going forward. What container material would work well, at a reasonable cost?

I use my Weber grill! I prefer to use the spray outside anyway. Any overspray just adds to cleaning my grill. Scrubbing and rinsing in the sink shouldn't be a problem if you run water to wash down the drain to rinse off the lye.

For soaking use plastic. We always stored NaOH and KOH solutions in plastic in the lab (polypropylene bottles) because the caustic alkaline solutions leaches stuff out of glass bottles. Caustic lye solutions are nasty stuff - great for cleaning iron but they attack lots of other stuff.
