I'd say my solar panels are a plus to the resale value, small, but is like a small little perk amongst the others in a home. Possible get a few more buyers interested in viewing the property for example.

I installed 6 solar panels (1.4kW grid-tied system) 2.1 years ago for around $2500. So far I have generated 4.59MWh of energy at $0.30/kWh in my area (NorCal) this has saved me $1377 so far over 2.1 years. And will continue to save me ~$600/year, assuming rates stay the same.

Where rates are lower the payback takes much longer, but for NorCal the payback for my small installation is just under 4 years.

I definitely installed solar purely as an investment, with excellent ROI in my area. Full pay back in 4 years, and ongoing $600/year payments that increase as rates rise in the future. Life of system is rated at ~25 years.
