Idea duplication can be particularly true in some genres, notably the one I am interested in... science fiction. Sliding Doors is a sort of "What if I had it to do over again" theme. Various "time travel" stories, such as Replay (Ken Grimwood) dwell in this arena.

As someone previously said, there aren't too many new ideas.. so the trick is what you do with your characters, setting, use of language, point of view, etc, etc, etc
