Ideally, the investments in a Roth should be those that create what would be otherwise taxable gains such as non qualified dividends. Unfortunately it is usually difficult to determine in advance what those might be. REITs are one type that are often appropriate in a Roth. Why would those be better in a Roth than in a traditional IRA? I believe you want to maximize returns in both, no?-murray
