ie: we have a big family event on jan 3.........do i HAVE to wear
the beads that DD#1 gave me, and the gold earrings from DS, and the
silver bracelet from DD#2.........

Of course you don't have to wear them. Wear what you like, if you like it. Wear what goes with your outfit.

Adult children are still in the adult category as far as I'm concerned, so if you don't want to keep the gift, don't keep it.

If it was me though, I would always keep jewelry. It is small, doesn't take up a lot of space, doesn't have to be on display anywhere and can be handed down to children and grandchildren who might like them.

I think you might be making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be.
