If a problem is actually found with the resistor (still most likely)...

Series wirewound power resistors are hundred year old technology, and rarely failed. Wonder what they came up with to replace it that is so unreliable.

I take that back. Coil resistors sometimes failed when they still used six volt coils in twelve volt systems for an easier start. Still, you'd think it would be at least located in a more accessible place.
