If, as I've read, its impossible to consistently time the market why bother selling at all?

One reason is to diversify. Also, you should re-evaluate your position in a particular company, like, say, every quarter or every year, and use that analysis to determine if you need to be more heavily invsted in that company, or if you need to ease your holdings back a bit. LTBH is great, and its what I do, but conditions change so often you have to be on top of things and be ready to modify your holdings as needed.
