If he does enter everything (or anything!) don't fuss with him about it if he makes mistakes. Just explain nicely that you usually put the electric bill in the "Electric" category that you created rather than the "Gas & Electric" category that is already there.

Dawn! how did you know!! :-)

I was thinking of backing the whole thing up on a diskette & encouraging him to enter it while expecting nothing. Actually, I intend to write the checks with instructions where to take them & when. And, honestly, I don't have the Quicken thing down pat very well but it is SO much fun to see exactly how much we've spent for Lunch or Groceries. Which are the big "challenge" categories.

Also he can't type like I, and its on a funky laptop with a very strange mouse region. (there IS a remote mouse & I've been too lazy to plug it in!)
