If I short a stock and cover with profit
and later short same stock but cover with loss,
does the wash sale rule apply?

All activities are in 30 day window.

To have a short wash sale you must have sold short within the 30 days after closing the short loss transaction, or within the 30 days prior to the closing, however, that trade must be open at the time of closing the short loss trade to be the effective repacement shares to cause a wash sale. Therefor, you do not have a wash sale unless you later shorted the stock again. Ed
