If someone is 72 what is the life expectancy?

That seemingly simple question is not easy to answer in a meaningful way. If you just want a correct answer that very likely does not apply to you or the person you are asking about - no problem.

The social security folks have tables (Google is your friend) that show like life expectancy for females and males at all ages. Those tables lump the obese smokers with those who exercise daily and happen to have parents who lived to age 100.

Finally keep in mind when you see a life expectancy number say of 13 years, that means half the people die by the 13th year and the other half die in the 13th year or later.

The tables that insurance companies have will give different answers and undoubtedly have values for life variables such as smoking, parents having cancer, etc.
