If the government is able to determine a person's password, which is typically stored in encrypted form, the credential could be used to log in to an account to peruse confidential correspondence or even impersonate the user.

This is more than outrageous - it is positively INSANE.

A government agent could not only "impersonate" the user, they could "plant" whatever negative statement or incriminating information they might need in order to "frame," prosecute and eliminate all political enemies.

Oh, and the same government agent could conveniently steal all the money out of online bank or brokerage accounts.

This is the kind of stuff that should lead to revolution - seriously!

If passwords are requested, the online company should immediately be required to report the same to the owner of the account and demand that a hearing be held in front of an elected state court judge - not merely some "kangaroo court" secret FISA collaborator "rubber-stamp" political appointee judge.

If this is true, then folks better go "off the grid" - and in a hurry, unless they want to be victims of government-sponsored pillaging and fraud.
