If you don't want to go have a manicure done at a salon for any reason...(if you ask me, it falls into one of those luxury categories to have someone else do for you what you could easily do yourself--great for a treat, but not very practical on an all-the-time basis), try doing it yourself--it really isn't hard. Just skip the nail polish part of these instructions:

Do it at night while watching TV. Any time you get a snag or a break, make it a priority to clip or file (but not bite) your nails to repair them. So, as said before, get the proper tools and carry them with you!
