If you have a company match on the 401k, put it that first to get maximum company match.

If you can qualify for a Roth, I'd do that next. The main reason, you don't have to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) come 70 1/2 years. So if you don't need the money, you can let it ride.

Right now, my mom is having to take RMD from her IRA and she doesn't really need the money. But Uncle Sam sure does need his tax money. So at a certain level its a waste.

Tax rate, who knows what they'll be next year much less 10 or 20 years from now.
