If you read the story, intercest, you will see that the fridge was almost like an heirloom passed down from generation to generation, and had some sentimental value apparently--it was "mom's fridge."

Also, assuming your time has an imputed labor value, given that you apparently spend hours per day scanning the news for material with which you can mock others that you feel are "lesser" than you (actually you don't, you're just very insecure obviously), then you wasted way more money in your imputed labor value than the old grandma did by having the fridge for 50 years.
