If your house is poorly insulated, your best investment is in more insulation. Even outside walls can be foamed, and ceilings can be blown or regular flat bats.

Even so, turning the thermostat down at night saves energy. When the heat goes on in the morning, the air heats up quickly, compared to the walls. It takes less energy to heat air than it does wall board. If you touch the walls, they may even feel cool.
