This Republican (doesn't matter) running for Congress says abortions are never necessary event to save life of mother. It totally slays me when non-medical people make medical pronouncements.

Just last weekend of call I had a prime example of a patient that it might come down to that. Case in nutshell, woman born with transposition of great vessels but surgically corrected (but things are never 100% working right). All of her physicians (OB, internist, cardiologist) tell her its not a good idea to get pregnant but she does anyway. She gets to 17 weeks EGA (term is 38-40), goes into atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure and admitted to ICU. Pregnancy is a 40 week cardiac stress test. Fortunately we were able to electrically cardiovert (place the paddles and yell clear) after chemical cardioversion failed. And with a diuretic the heart failure improved.

She has 7 weeks until her child is viable via c-section. She might not live long enough.
