I'm going to be looking for one - or possibly two - 5+ year old cars in the next 6 months.

16 year old twins.

Been dabbling a bit in Craigslist just to start to get an idea of prices. There's some local dealers around, too, it seems like some lots specialize in the cheaper cars (under 10K) and some in the pricier models.

It's been a LONG time since I bought a used car. I think I used a newspaper last time, if that tells you anything. DH and I tend to live cheap, save up, buy new, drive 'em till they won't start it again. But I've only got 6 years on my current vehicle so - isn't that a little new for a kid who's going to ding it up? Yet you want safety features....
