I'm late to reply, but South Africa is mostly no more dangerous than any other place in Africa, and much safer than most.

You don't want to be spending time in Jo'berg, but Cape Town is lovely, and a trip down to the Cape is a fabulous way to spend a day.

Kruger is excellent, if you've never been to the Serengeti. The roads are largely tar, the lodges are all fenced, and the wildlife is abundant. If you've never been on safari, Kruger is an excellent first-time experience.

If you're going with a tour, you should be absolutely fine. We did Cape Town on our own and Kruger and the Kwa-Zulu Natal with a guide, and had a wonderful time. Don't miss, if you get the chance, the boat to Robben Island, where the prison for political prisoners offers tours guided by some of the former prisoners. Mandela spent many decades there, and the tour is excellent.
