I'm not sure what achievment in Whitacre's career led him to be selected for this assignment, but, if it has anything to do with AT&T, color me unimpressed. A number of years back I couldn't contain my glee at being able to remove myself from their land line phone service. I was also an Ameritech cell phone customer and eventually got fed up with dropped calls and poor customer service. My Verizon Wireless bill is much higher than I'd prefer to be paying, but I would never return to AT&T no matter what cool phone they have exclusive rights to.I won't be rushing to get in on an IPO for a company being run by the ex-CEO of AT&T. If you were sitting in that board room and were predisposed to finding an outsider to run GM, would you not look first to large, well run manufacturing businesses? If the prospects for Ford were so dramatically improved by bringing in a top executive of Boeing, what can you learn from that? I'd be scouring the halls of a business like Caterpillar, certainly not AT&T.Doug
