I'm pretty sure that American 'Chinatowns' are nothing like towns in China today.
(I live on the Pacific Coast - as I understand it, many of the settlers in the mid nineteenth century came from Canton, which is a port in China. So there are many Chinese people who aren't from that tradition. And the Chinatowns have kept some quaintness that is intriguing to many young people)
