I'm still running my eight-year-old Gateway desktop at home with XP, and I plan to keep on running it another eight unless it stops being functional for the tasks I want to use it for.

Lifespan? Support? Meh. Unless I can't get it to do what I expect it to do, those words are meaningless to me.

Anti-virus does not protect against all security issues. The security issues it has at end of life will always remain. Office has its own set of security issues. How long will Google support Chrome? How long will it be safe to use XP for internet access? Will your system disk crash, and you won't be able to obtain one that works in your system? I have a hard time seeing XP and an already 8 year old desktop as viable in another 5 years.

It is possible to get a document viewer for newer Office documents. I would probably still be using Office 97 at home had my XP laptop not failed and the Office install media is unreadable. A couple of decades can do that to media.

(Not migrating home systems to Windows 8).
