I'm sure I spent more than 28 hrs on our taxes this year using TurboTax. As I file everything in order of the form to which it goes as the year goes along, it would be terrible to just put things in a box as many do. And this was after automatic transfer of donations from the previous forms and downloading investment information directly from the borkers (which had a lot of false starts because information wasn't ready). There was a lot of waiting for various information to become available. The last things were a trivial K-1 for my wife's investment group, a late apportionment of a REIT dividends accounting for return of capital, and recalculating a double tax free mutual fund for a small amount of AMT obligations. It would have been very difficult to do this by hand.
